USPGA Championship

Post  Arsam on Wed Aug 19, 2009 4:44 pm

Since I won the PGA Championship over at OWGC I obviously love playing Hazeltine, but I was surprised on the setup here. Particularly the fact that mixed tees were not used. I would of expected that at least No. 14 would have forward tees used on a couple of rounds to provide a opportunity of driving the green.

In any event I enjoy this great course and only hope I can do as well as I have on the other tours particularly with the ridiculous handicap I have on this tour for some reason.

Yes, I also played this course on the APCD-courses tour,
but on that tour I play the champ-level....

It will be interesting to see what differs, or if I have learned anything Smile

My first round here was ok I think

"Attention Setup Committee... We have a volunteer for the next event!" lol!

All kidding aside, I haven't played my first round of the PGA yet, but (at the risk of also nominating myself for the Setup Committee) I was kinda hoping the setup would mimic some of the teeing flexibility, too. I noticed that during the US Open at Bethpage Black, seemed like the tees were all back, all the time. Not a major issue, but some of these latest Links releases are long slogs from the back tees, and since the real events have shown a recent trend toward teebox shuffling, it would be nice if that would be considered for us Linksters, too!

Please note - this is not intended as a complaint or in any way a sign of ingratitude for those who toil to do the event setups -- your efforts are greatly appreciated and I have fun competing in the events! cheers

John

P.S. Congrats on the OWGT PGA win, Dick!

My apologies for the lack of 'mixed tees' as is usual on the OT, but I decided that for the final major of the year, we would have all back tees in play. It is after all a major, lol.

Normal service with 'mixed tees' will resume in the future.

Hope it doesn't detract from playing the event.

Wink

My comments were not meant as a complaint Daz, and after noting your message it the other thread about a family loss I can understand your situation. My condolences on your loss and thanks for all that you do to provide this tour and keep it running.

This game is really an amazing experience.... Very Happy Very Happy
My last round was very exciting

The first 9 started bad and got worse.....

My first shot went left, just a few meters from the fairway though, but a doublebogie anyway,
hole 2 ended in a par, and then doublebogie again etc.....

Hole 6 was a disaster (I think it was hole 6, a par 4)
First shot OB on the left, 3:rd shot went right instead and finally when I'm on the green
I made 4 puts (IIRC), I got a 9 (+5) on that hole Embarassed Embarassed

Had +14 after the first 9, but the back 9 was a completely different story.

Two bogies (hole 10 and 12) but from there and on I got even with the course,
1 birde and 1 bogie and 4 pars ended the score at +16 totally
Despite the fact I made a waterhit on the 2:nd shot at hole 16 I still
got +2 on the back 9 Very Happy

It feels so nice when you can keep the ball on the short stuff,
I really like RTS when no shot is certain.... Very Happy

thanks to Daz for maintaining this tour, looking forward to next round

Hello Rolle, I am glad to see you are still working hard on improving you play using RTS. If I may ask a small question, what view do you use when playing RTS? I use Close Up view which I find much easier to judge the movement of the club when putting and chipping as opposed to Normal or Panoramic View. If you are not using Close Up view I would highly recommend it and I think that it may help you improve your skill in putting and chipping.

No detraction at all. Just played my first round and it is a fine test. You do mix up the tees pretty well on non-major events, so I understand wanting to make the majors more testing. Besides, I have no idea how much time it takes to setup a course for a tourney - for all I know, it could take forever to settle on suitable hole locations, let alone think about teeing variety! Anyway, thanks for all your work to keep the tour running, Daz! Smile

Well it's not quite forever but I set up the OWGT Euro Tour on a weekly basis (with help from Mailman, Vainte and Daz now and then) and I would say at the most it takes 60-90 minutes and may vary with the course. I used to take much longer because I tried to get an even number of front middle and back pins and left and right side. Now when I look at pins I just use the BLI marker and look for bad slopes and try to pick 4 spots all in different locations around the green that work well with the green conditions that I selected. Nothing worse than having firm fast and you place a pin on the front edge behind a bunker and you are approaching from 200 yards. Now if its a short 3rd shot on a long par 5, then I'll get devious Twisted Evil and you'll see pins on trickier slopes and locations. I do my best to make eagles hard to come by unless you have ice in your veins to try a risky shot. Mixed tees are great and use them every week to give different looks and alter your strategy off the tee.

WHOOOAH..... the player got big in closeup Shocked Very Happy

It took some time to get used to it, I didn't notice any difference in feeling (yet)
but I liked the view anyway, felt more real than being 5 m. tall. Laughing

With closeup it feels like you're really on the course Smile
Thanks again for the tip Arsam Smile

But I want to forget hole 9 a.s.a.p. (scored an 11 Rolling Eyes )
